DANVILLE, PA — Controversy surrounds Northumberland County Court this week, after a drug dealer was sentenced to drug-court instead of state prison.

The issue at hand is whether or not “dealers” should be accepted into the drug-court system. Many oppose a deal made by Northumberland County prosecutors that allowed an admitted drug dealer to avoid any prison time in exchange for cooperation.

“They [dealers] belong——deal or no deal——somewhere else: a place with lots of steel bars, preferably.”

Critics argue that under the logic of the drug-court system, drug dealers “do not belong”. While most participants in drug court programs are addicts, users, and “non-violent offenders”, it is not unusual to see individuals whose charges include dealing admitted into a program — it depends on the judge, and the details of the case.

In this case the judge followed the laws as written, the question is whether or not it was good judge-ment.
