Wiener of the Week

Wiener of the Week << S W A L L O W

Welcome to the very first installment of “Wiener of the Week”, a new semi-weekly post here on SWALLOW.

The Wiener of the Week will be reserved for those whose public comments on the subject of addiction are the most ridiculous, clueless, and ignorant. Based on many of the opinions I have been reading, I should have no shortage of subjects.

This Week’s Wiener Winner: San Francisco Supervisor Chris Daly

It’s always nice to have an opportunity to write about my onetime place of residence, San Fran-sicko. In a city that idolizes the homeless, embraces medical marijuana, tolerates citizens shitting in it’s streets, and pays for city employees’ sex-change operations with taxpayer dollars—Supervisor Chris Daly regards a recent proposal for a community drug court as “a wasteful idea as the city continues to struggle with its multi-million dollar budget deficit”.

Facts from NADCP Ten Year Drug Court Study*

Investment costs in drug court were $1,392 less per person than that of court “business-as-usual.”

Savings due to reduced recidivism for drug court participants totaled more than $79 million over the 10-year period.

Apparently Daly has never seen any studies on the cost of operating a treatment court vs. the cost of incarceration—or even any studies on recidivism.  This is the kind of ignorance that stands out, that really just shines… so in the spirit of the first-ever Wiener of the Week, I’d like to be the first to congratulate the Supervisor. “Mr. Daly sir, you are a wiener.”
