Purdue, OxyContin Maker, Races Rivals to Deter Abuse

And I quote: “Purdue Pharma LP, the maker of the painkiller OxyContin, is racing smaller drug companies to introduce tamper-resistant pills that addicts can’t abuse.”

Excuse me, but what the fuck? Seriously. This is Purdue’s big plan? To make the pills “tamper resistant”? Several “smaller drug companies” in the generic market have been implementing tamper-resistance for years. Purdue was aware of this technology, but obviously didn’t want to tarnish the “Oxy” brand-name on the street. The gennies have added “grit”, made the texture “gummy”, etc. to make the pills difficult to snort or shoot. Great. Will the snorters and the shooters be disappointed? Sure. Will this reduce the abuse potential? You must be fucking kidding.

The high that OxyContin-abusers chase is not a product of defeating it’s controlled release “technology” (really, nothing more technologically intricate than a “jawbreaker”). It is the plain fact that, unlike Vicodin, Percocet, etc., Oxy’s contain high-doses of oxycodone (10, 20, 40, 80 mgs), without any additional “adulterants” such as acetaminophen. So basically, you can take retardedly-high doses without overdosing on fucking Tylenol… (those who haven’t done it, I don’t recommend it) …provided you are sufficiently “opiod tolerant”. And if you’re not? Well, then you OD on the actual opiates, and die. No big surprise there.

So, no matter how much “technology” they build into their pills, plenty of “abuse potential” remains. You can still ingest 80, 160, 320 mgs at a time. With no acetaminophen to OD on, or to tear your stomach to shreds. These “actions” by Purdue are nothing but public relations ploys, pure and simple. Defeat Purdue’s tamper-resistance? All you have to do is chew… and swallow.
