Dan Onorato
PITTSBURGH, PA – Looking to have a few cocktails while in Pittsburgh? You’d better grab an extra twenty from the ATM. Back in January when a 10 percent drink tax sponsored by Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato went into effect there was an immediate public outcry—but this summer with prices on virtually everything rising as fast as the temperature—the backlash is really heating up.
Onorato says the tax was to support Public Transit, and that he had “no choice”—but bar and restaurant owners and patrons don’t want to hear it. In a spirit reminiscent of the Whiskey Rebellion of 1794, the irritated imbibers are making their feelings known—by publicly calling-out Onorato to make sure everyone knows who’s behind the tax. Some bar receipts are even listing the added tax as the “Onorato Tax”.
